Calculating...

Hypothetical illustration. Not guaranteed future performance.

This illustration uses historical annual index results with a hypothetical 0% annual credit floor and an annual cap of 9% for starting balances below $25,000 or 11% for starting balances of $25,000 or more. The historical 2016–2025 sequence is repeated as needed for the selected retirement timeline. This repetition is an illustrative assumption, not a forecast of future returns. The calculation assumes annual compounding without additional contributions, withdrawals, fees, or taxes. Actual contract results may differ materially.

Know Your Choices

What Can You Do With an Old 401(k)?

Depending on your plan rules and individual circumstances, you may have several choices.

  • Leave money with your former employer, if permitted
  • Move funds to a new employer's plan, if accepted
  • Roll eligible retirement savings into an IRA
  • Take a distribution, potentially triggering taxes and penalties

Your decision should consider investment choices, fees, access to funds, creditor protections, tax treatment, and retirement goals.

Questions Worth Asking

  • What fees am I currently paying?
  • How much market risk am I comfortable with?
  • When will I need access to my savings?
  • What are my retirement income goals?
  • What plan benefits might I lose if I move?

A retirement review can help you evaluate your choices before making an important decision.

Understanding Your Options

How Do Principal-Protection Retirement Strategies Work?

Some retirement solutions available through PlanRight use fixed indexed annuity contracts issued by insurance companies.

These contracts are not direct investments in the stock market. Interest may be credited based on the performance of a referenced index, subject to caps, participation rates, spreads, crediting periods, and other contract terms.

Certain contracts offer a 0% floor for negative index-crediting results during a specified period. However, withdrawals, surrender charges, optional rider fees, and other provisions may reduce available value.

Annuity contracts may include surrender periods and limitations on access to funds. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability.

A traditional 401(k) or IRA already provides tax-deferred treatment. Purchasing an annuity inside a qualified retirement account does not provide additional tax-deferral benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common 401(k) Rollover Questions

Do I have to move my 401(k) when I leave a job?

Not necessarily. Depending on your account balance and plan rules, you may be able to leave funds with your former employer.

Can I roll over my 401(k) without paying taxes?

A properly completed direct rollover of eligible pretax funds to a traditional IRA or eligible employer plan generally avoids current income taxation. Roth rollovers and conversions have different rules.

Does an 11% cap mean I earn 11% every year?

No. A cap limits the maximum interest credited under the assumed formula for a particular period. Actual credited interest may be lower or zero. The caps in this calculator are hypothetical.

Can I protect my savings from market losses?

Some insurance contracts provide protection from negative index-crediting results. Contract charges, withdrawals, and surrender provisions may still reduce value.

Are there withdrawal restrictions?

Certain retirement contracts include surrender periods, withdrawal limitations, and other restrictions. These should be reviewed before moving funds.

Is a rollover right for everyone?

No. Employer plans may provide valuable features, including certain investment options, lower fees, creditor protections, and special distribution rules. Each option should be evaluated based on individual circumstances.

Important Information: This material is for educational purposes and is not individualized investment, tax, or legal advice.

Calculator Methodology: The calculator uses S&P 500 calendar-year price returns for 2016–2025, excluding dividends, with hypothetical annual index-crediting caps of 9% for initial balances below $25,000 and 11% for initial balances of $25,000 or more. It assumes a 0% annual index-crediting floor, 100% participation, no spread, and annual compounding. The cap tier is determined by the initial balance and held constant. For periods longer than 10 years, the historical sequence is repeated. For shorter periods, the calculation uses the earliest years in that sequence. These assumptions do not represent actual or guaranteed annuity performance.

Actual annuity results depend on crediting dates, caps, participation rates, spreads, fees, withdrawals, and contract provisions. Historical index returns do not predict future performance. The calculation does not include taxes, fees, surrender charges, withdrawals, or additional contributions.

Fixed indexed annuities are insurance products, not bank deposits, and are not FDIC insured. Guarantees depend on the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability. Surrender charges, liquidity restrictions, and rider costs may apply. An annuity held inside a qualified retirement account does not provide additional tax deferral.
